Adston UK Ltd. Composite Steel Modular Volumetric Building System

Description of System

Modules are constructed from a combination of hot-rolled steel and light gauge steel to create structural boxes that can be readily stacked in accordance with the project-specific parameters. Modules are corner supported, with some internal posts along the side walls, and align structurally at their square or rectangular hollow section corner columns. Connection is by means of RHS spigots at the columns and bolts through the RHS perimeter beams. The individual modules are structurally interconnected and designed to meet the requirements of Eurocode 3 and the United Kingdom National Annex. In typical house modules, intermediate perimeter and internal columns are provided if required.

The primary structural elements are bolted together to form a rigid box. Modules have been designed to be lifted from the posts. A lifting detail has been specifically designed at each of these lifting . Modules are lifted with a suitable lifting frame that ensures the tension on each lifting point is evenly distributed.

Durability Assessment 60 Years

Limits on scope

  •  2 storeys + roof subject to structural analysis.
  • Bottom members minimum 150mm above external ground level and isolated from damp.
  • Masonry wall cladding cavities (minimum 50mm) should be ventilated.
  • Rendered external thermal insulation systems must have a minimum 15mm drained cavity.
  • Minimum 25mm drained and ventilated cavity behind dry cladding systems
  • Adston (UK) Ltd. must be contracted for the design, manufacture, supply and erection of the structures.
  • A chartered structural engineer suitably experienced in the design of this type of structure must be engaged for the structural analysis and design.

Adston UK Ltd SIP System

System Description:

The system comprises structural panels manufactured as a sandwich of OSB/3 (Orientated Strand Board) to the outer faces + a core of rigid foam polyurethane insulation. The panels are used to form vertical wall elements and flat or sloping roof panels. Horizontal connections, corners and linings to openings are made via solid timbers which are incorporated into the edge of a panel by cutting out the necessary insulation and inserting the timber. Mechanical fixings then connect the elements together to form a rigid box type structure.

Durability Assessment: minimum 60 years

Limits on scope:

  • Maximum 4 storeys
  • Base of ground storey panels minimum of 150mm above external ground level
  • External wall claddings must have a drained and vented cavity
  • Every structure must be designed by a structural engineer including the floor construction which shall not comprise a SIP’s panel
  • The OSB must not be cut or routed to accommodate services
  • A chartered structural engineer suitably experienced in the design of this type of structure must be contracted for the structural analysis and design.
